Ways to Reduce Your Methane Gas Output

At the Well Done Foundation, our mission is to tackle a massive, but often invisible, source of greenhouse gas: orphaned oil and gas wells. By permanently plugging these methane leaks, we are taking direct, physical action to slow climate change.

But the methane story doesn’t end with abandoned infrastructure. As individuals, our collective lifestyle choices also create a powerful ripple effect. Methane is an incredibly potent greenhouse gas—much stronger than carbon dioxide in the short term—making any action we take to reduce its output critically important.

The good news? You can still live a full, happy, and modern life while making simple, impactful choices that reduce your net methane impact on the planet. This isn’t about giving up your favorite things, but it’s about making conscious, informed substitutions.

Here are a few ways to start:

1. Rethink Your Plate: The Food Connection

The largest source of human-caused methane emissions is agriculture, particularly from the digestive processes (enteric fermentation) and manure management of livestock, especially cattle.

You can have a tremendous impact by adjusting your diet. Consider embracing “Meatless Mondays” (or more!); beef has a significantly higher methane footprint than other proteins. Switching out a beef meal for chicken, fish, or a plant-based alternative once a week makes a measurable difference.  On top of that there are health benefits to this as well as methane reduction. Along the same lines, choose alternative milks when you can. Dairy is a major contributor to agricultural methane, so swapping cow’s milk for oat, almond, or soy milk in your coffee or cereal is an easy, single substitution that dramatically lowers your diet’s impact. Finally, be a Food Waste Warrior. When organic waste like food scraps ends up in a landfill, it decomposes without oxygen, generating methane. Plan meals, use leftovers, and compost food scraps if you have the means to divert them from the landfill entirely. Think of these shifts not as a sacrifice, but as an opportunity to discover new, delicious, and planet-friendly recipes.

2. Manage Your Home and Waste

Your daily habits around the house have an indirect but important impact on methane emissions through energy use and waste management.

For many homes much of the energy used to power and heat those homes comes from natural gas, and the process of extracting, processing, and transporting that gas is a major source of leaks. You can help by choosing clean energy if your utility offers a renewable option, or by installing solar panels. Even simpler? Turn down the heat a few degrees in the winter. Reducing your energy demand minimizes the pressure on the entire fossil fuel system. Also, as mentioned, composting your scraps is one of the most direct ways to prevent methane formation, turning your kitchen waste into nutrient-rich soil instead of a potent greenhouse gas.

3. Support the Bigger Picture: Systemic Solutions

The biggest sources of methane—like our country’s three million orphaned wells—require large-scale, systematic action. While your personal choices matter, you can amplify your impact by supporting organizations like ours who dedicated to direct environmental repair.

At the Well Done Foundation, we offer a simple, concrete solution: we physically plug the leaks from abandoned oil and gas wells, preventing methane from entering the atmosphere for generations to come. By supporting us, you join the fight to clean up the fossil fuel legacy.

Ready to do more?

You can directly support our mission and accelerate our well-plugging efforts by making a donation to the Well Done Foundation. Alternatively, for businesses or individuals looking to offset their footprint, you can purchase our carbon credits, knowing your contribution goes directly into the impactful, verifiable work of eliminating abandoned well methane.

Every conscious choice you make, from your dinner plate to your advocacy, makes you a vital part of the solution. Thank you for making a difference for the ours and other generations to come!
